Past week ECD (the EMC / DellEMC / OpenText owned Enterprise Content Division) celebrated the return of its European user conference on the Documentum product family: Momentum Europe (#mmtm16). Since its previous occurrence in 2012 in Vienna, Austria, the event has been missed dearly. Customers, partners and ECD staff all agreed that this setup – just content, no hardware – is so much better than being a niche at EMC World. We all talked Content. Despite that the turn-up was understandably lower than previous editions, the attendees were treated with the latest and greatest from ECD and its partners.
Much has changed in those 4 years but that ‘we all talk content’-vibe has remained. I’m already looking forward to being part of OpenText Enterprise World 2017 in Toronto, Canada. I’m curious to see if that Momentum Europe vibe will resonate in ECD’s new home. A home that is a software company and understands ECM inside out. I truly hope they will understand the importance of Momentum Europe and keeping it on the agenda. Content innovation, product excellence, best practices and lessons learned in Europe are not bound to country borders. It would be as strange as organizing an US & Canadian tour of 60+ events kicked-off by OpenText Enterprise World Texas, passing OpenText Enterprise World California and OpenText Enterprise World British Columbia along the way and having its grand finale at OpenText Enterprise World Ontario in Toronto after 6+ months...
Despite that we’re in this vacuum and awaiting regulatory approval for ECD to provide new impetus to OpenText, this Momentum Europe in Barcelona, Spain, was one of a kind. Of course, for collectors of SWAG, this was the one and only where you could find DellEMC as a prefix to Documentum. It was the European debut of InfoArchive at this large scale. With our booth positioned almost across the InfoArchive booth, we saw many customers requesting a demo. Another booth with a premiere and a lot of traction was the LEAP booth. Despite its platform services just being released in beta, many customers were seriously interested. Something we also learned from the many live demos we performed of our SENATE app, the first partner-build LEAP app. The Informed Products team not only demonstrated what SENATE does (in case you missed it: managing VIP meeting agendas and minutes) but also shared the road they travelled. The one question that they couldn’t answer was – given the beta state of the LEAP platform services – an impossible one: pricing. As soon as ECD has hatched their pricing model, SENATE can be priced accordingly. But just between you and me: we weren’t expecting that question at this early stage yet!
What also made a difference, were the industry specific tracks. Known from EMC World, but this was their debut in Europe. As the sponsor of the Life Science track, we were keen to see if our products found their sweet spot in a larger audience. And they did. Both SPA4LS (SharePoint Add-in for Life Sciences) and EQMS Light received outstanding feedback from both ECD product management as well as Documentum Life Science customers. The demand for both products is huge. EQMS Light fits the demand for many that have not yet matured into a top-25 enterprise. SPA4LS can fit many scenarios in an industry where corporate boundaries are extended into various contract organizations.
We also had interesting conversations with customers in other industries that deploy both SharePoint and Documentum. We’ve given many a demonstration of SPA4D (SharePoint Add-in from Documentum). For some of them an astonishing example of combining enterprise control with Documentum and the best in class collaboration with SharePoint that can open doors that so far have been carefully locked.
We’d love to bring this success to OpenText Enterprise World as well. It’s on our 2017 roadmap. Next to updating our products with new requirements, it also means staying in shape so we all still fit our orange shirts. No better way to stand out in the crowd; 5 guys in orange shirts at a booth with orange poufs. And for those that dropped by and preferred sunglasses instead of a powerbank as a giveaway… we’ll consider it for next time :)
And finally, some pointers to additional information:
